Spotlight Sunday: Codos on the Windowsills

1) Tell us a little about your blog.

I started my blog in April of 2011 on a whim. Normally I’m an obsessive planner, but I decided just to go for it, so this past year has really been a learning experience. I write about my life as a college student, my love of coffee, music, books, and post different diy projects that I’ve been working on.

2) What got you into blogging?

I started reading Gala Darling’s blog in high school and just absolutely loved it. Then I was finding more and more blogs that I loved, and was spending all this time reading them, and I started to realize that these were all normal people. It wasn’t just internet celebrities who were posting about their adventures. Plus, there’s a huge community within crafting blogs, and I wanted to be part of that.

3) How would you describe your personal style?

This is tough! I’ve been trying to figure out the answer to this one for years! I think that one thing that comes from being able to sew is that I love well-made clothes. There is nothing better than a perfectly fitted blouse, or a classic blazer. I love clean, sharp lines. I also have a thing for John Hughes movies, so sometimes that leaks in to what I wear too.

4) Do you have any influences in your posts?

Most of my posts are just about what’s going on in my life, so I wouldn’t say that those have influences. I do partake in Gala’s Things I Love Thursday posts, but I’ve mentioned before that I’m a huge fan of hers. I guess I’m also influenced by Sarah Von of Yes and Yes. I like how she keeps everything very upbeat. In an indirect way I suppose that my posts are also influenced by other crafty bloggers, since often the things that I make are inspired by other people’s projects, or use techniques that other people have posted.

5) What got you into sewing and crafting clothes?

When I was 5 my mom started reading the Laura Ingles Wilder books to me, and I loved them. Laura and her sisters learned how to sew and knit, and so I wanted to too! So I’ve been crafting things my whole life. I didn’t start to get “serious” about knitting until 7th grade, and wasn’t really very good at sewing until I got to high school. I had this thing where I refused to read directions, which can be a bit of a problem.

6) How is your blog different from others?

There are so many blogs in existence, and I think that sometimes the only thing that differentiates them is that they’re all run by different people. My blog is different in that no one else can write about my life! I have a lot of different interests, and I try to mix them all in, so my blog is a bit of a fashion blog, a bit of sewing blog, with book reviews and music thrown in here and there. One of the things that I love about blogging is that while a lot of us do write about similar topics, we all do so from different perspectives and in different proportions, so every blog is different from the next!

7) What do you see yourself doing with your personal style/clothing in 5 years?

In 5 years I plan on wearing clothes still! I guess it depends a lot on what happens in the fashion world, and what the higher ups chose to put in stores. I think in a way we’re all slaves to fashion a little; you can buy what’s put in stores, or you can look outdated. Rant aside, in 5 years I hope to have a real-girl job where I have to wear business clothes, and then I’ll be learning how to adapt my style to fit professional dress codes, and either going crazy or being a slob on weekends!

8) Do you have any particular hobbies besides blogging and making clothing?

Does fangirling over One Direction count as a hobby? In all seriousness, I love music. I play flute and trombone, and I’m working on teaching myself guitar this summer, and I hope to one day learn to play the bagpipes!

Thank you Meli for being such a great interviewee! I also did a guest post on her blog as well so don't forget to check out her great sewing projects, tumblr loves, and other life happenings at Codos on the Windowsills!
