boating & america day!

Whoa, Soy. Way to be the only person with a blog in the U.S. not to post about what you did on the Fourth of July. Did you know some Americans think that Independence is a WORLDWIDE holiday? I'm not kidding you. If you think I'm an ignorant American I probably won't blame you. There's a lot of unedumacated fools up in hurr.

But my Fourth of July was amazing. We spent the afternoon soaking up some sun on my uncle's boat out on the river and I loved it so much! Complete the day with some fish tacos, fireworks, and crepes and you've got yourself a very happy and full Soyoung.

-Hope your Fourth of July went fabulously (assuming you live in AMERICUHH! [said in a redneck accent])

summer lovin'

Outfit details:
Blouse- Nordstrom Rack
Shoes- Nordstrom Rack
High Waist shorts- Some little shop in Korea

I decided that I love my hair. It's this weird orangey color with a few strands of sickly green... But I'm embracing my laziness to change it and further fry my hair. Lately I just want to cut it all off, too. I'm pretty sure I'm just itching to get it done since it's the summer and come winter I'll absolutely regret it... You know those cute girls with the pixie cut and they wear flowered dresses and other crazy cute stuff? I'm jelly.

But I think I'll just stick with the puke hair. :) ALSO! I'm looking to get a tattoo this month and have found a few places in Portland. If any of the readers have had a tattoo, do you know if I need a consultation to get some writing on my  back? Just 7 words, and not very big at all. I figure better safe than sorry, but I'm still curious!

Sleep & Seattle.

**WARNING: This post, in particular, is picture obese.

Okay. So now I understand why people argue about whether or not Portland or Seattle is better in terms of sheer awesomeness. Both have amazing and a great variety of food, and an equally wide range of things to do. We went to the Pacific Science Center where I geeked out a little, and on the way we passed a sci-fi/music/pop culture museum. YEAH. THEY HAVE THOSE. They had a poster of a Dalek out front and I guess they had a Doctor Who exhibit? Put that on the list of things to do in Seattle. It will happen.

Did I mention the food? We went to a pizzeria nearby, Tutto Bella, and it was so cute and the pizza. Good.

Molly Moon's ice cream. Got me some Stumptown coffee ice cream :) The salted caramel was a close contender. No joke. That ice cream was life-changing.

Fun with mirrors. Anywhoozles, that's been my wonderful weekend in Seattle with the fam bam. I've decided that I love this place.

bug bites & sore ankles.

There was one very important thing I learned about myself last week whilst camping:

I'm not a camper. (If you couldn't tell by the wonderfully optimistic title of this post.)

Don't get me wrong- camping in Oregon is definitely something for the bucket list. The scenery is just breathtaking, whether you're a hippie or not. But, I think it's the community bathrooms. Call me high-maintenance, I don't care, but just the very thought of walking barefoot on a mystery floor just gives me the chills. And this is why I'm a microbiology major... But I loved all of the green!

Except for the bees.. I get that they're important for pollination and stuff... but there was this one blasted bee that would literally follow me for an hour at the beach. Drove me nuts. I was running, in circles, at the beach, looking like an idiot. It's okay Mr. Bee. I forgive you, if that's how you wanna play it.

The campsite was near Tillamook so you know we had to go to the cheese factory. The whole town smelled like, you know, cows and their byproducts but if you get past that it's lovely. Stinky cheese, salami and wine's the way to go. :) Camping was definitely a grateful experience. I daresay I'd do it again. Just because I'm that crazy.

professional potato and blogger interviews

Outfit Details:
Dress: Red Light Vintage
Cardigan: Thrifted
TOMS: Gift (Did you know kids sizes are $20 cheaper?! Yay for small feet!)

So something you should know about me: I suck at being a teenager.
I don't eat my weight in junk food, I don't party, I don't like to cuss, I prefer to dress like a grandmother, and hate staying up late.

I LOVE to stay home and watch reruns of Doctor Who, Community (Inspector Spacetime, anyone? Anyone?! Bueller? ) and 30 Rock. And I'm getting into Top Gear. It's unhealthy. And I want to play Diablo 3 so bad so you can bet I'll be taking over my brother's fancy gaming laptop when I get back to AZ next week.
If I go out, it's for one of two things- 1)eating or 2)shopping. And I go full on cray with the latter. It takes me a good hour or more to look at the whole store, then I pick what I want. It's a process. This is who I am.

Hopefully there are more anti-teenagers in this world, or I'm done for.

UPDATE: I'm gonna be starting a bi-weekly (?)  blogger spotlight/interviews for the summer and we'll see how it goes! If you're interested , please don't hesitate to contact me at: soychild[AT]gmail[DOT]com and we'll figure something out, yo*!

*I say 'yo' a lot. I'm not sorry.

keepin' portland weird.

I'm alive y'all! First year of college completed with a non-life threatening GPA, and that's good enough for me.  Since then I arrived in Portland, Oregon last week and am gonna spend a hefty part of my summer here and couldn't be more excited. This place makes Arizona look like the barren, dusty desert that it is! The local food here is amazing with farms everywhere for fresh ingredients, and the music scene's awesome AND THE SHOPPING.

OhdearGodtheshopping. Vintage stores abound, lemmetellya. I'm in Heaven. All of you reading this must come to Portland at least once in your life. You will find at least one thing you will love, I guarantee you.

she's got you high

Let's talk about brownies for a second. They're amazing- I mean fudgy and soft and chocolatey, and when my friends and I made them this week we added toffee bits and pretzels and the toffee got all melty and it was seriously a gift from God. Pair it with an Audrey Hepburn/Marilyn Monroe moviefest and that is chick days at its FINEST. The next day we made Linguini with spicy clam sauce (my favorite pasta dish.. you know.. that I can make..) and rocked out on Just Dance and played dominoes like spinsters. I don't worry about my future, thankyouverymuch.

But yeah. I've just been prepping to move into my dorm, fitting in crazy nights of spinsterdom with my friends and things of the sort. Thank God we have Winter Break to see each other again. And I'm thrilled most of us have blogs to keep up with each other!

God's gift to us in the form of pasta

I wonder how this blog is going to look once I'm confined to my dorm.. It's hard living from a downsized closet!!

seashells and taffy

Oooh, I bet you hate me for posting these pictures now... I kind of hate myself too, the second I got back from Oregon I've been detoxing, and I've been really good too! Swear!

Oh lanta. First it's fresh saltwater taffy, then salmon burgers with homemade fries, then Voodoo Doughnuts. (My lovely doughnut is the one with the oreos and peanut butter on the right... It's called the Dirty Old Bastard, no joke. Or was it Old Dirty Bastard? Let's not get into semantics, that thing was AMAZING.)

And now, after a week of eating all of my fruit and vegetables and drinking milk, I post these photos. Why? I guess my tummy wants to be fat again! WOO!

...because i'm a nub.

A few pictures to prove that I was actually busy the past month... Yeah, yeah. I was a shoddy photographer during the trip and I left my camera in my aunt's car in Washington. Yeah I know. I'm in Arizona. But it's on its way, don't you worry your pretty little heads!

I already miss my family. I think the best part about meeting up is that we really do love seeing each other. I love my baby cousins, my funny aunts and uncles, and the FOOD. Ay, la comida. (Went bilingual on ya!) We all appreciate good food, not just junk, and we always get a good variety when we all meet up.

I can't wait to see the family again as soon as I can, and to experience the freezing cold winter. Yeah, even in the summer up in Oregon I was wearing jeans and two sweaters, deal with it! (:

civil wars.

yOvquX on Make A Gif, Animated Gifs

Spending the whole day in Portland- did you know there's a satirical show on IFC about the weirdos in Portland? There's some weirdos here, but that usually means cute, kitschy food stands and vintage shops! I really do love this place, and sharing it with some amazing people! Ferrealsies, if you've never been to Portland, come. I am completely convinced that it's the birthplace of the hipster!

Midsummer Afternoon Delight

I've always wanted to have a tea party- like a legit, pinkies up, one lump or two tea party! Luckily, my friend Gen hosted a lovely tea party which included board games, stuffed animals, and baking banana bread and fudge. I introduced my friends to Earl Grey tea and how to prepare it, and I left with the rest of the tea because I don't think they liked it (Hey, their loss.) I guess we crammed a lot of things we said we would do in about a span of a week. I love these people, and being away from them all for a month kind of sucks, but I'm just too excited to see my family and the shopping. OHHH THE SHOPPING.

lazy like summer mornings.

My friend Gennifer's Senior Photo Shoot, I'm so glad she brought us along. I really cannot believe how fast time has flown. Only 2 more months before we move all our belongings to college!
(I made the white dress she's wearing in the first two pictures, it fits her perfectly, I was so happy!)

In other news, the only thing that gets me out of bed in the mornings is my vacation to Oregon in a week or so! The family and I are driving (eep!) to Oregon. We've rented a beach house and my cousin is coming to the vacation with us. UHM. AND WE'RE GONNA WATCH HARRY POTTER WHEREVER THE HECK WE ARE. That's right. I just hope that this Physics class will end with an A. If not, at least I have Oregon to look forward to...

life rushes by, but the red shoes go on.

Currently watching The Red Shoes on Youtube while writing this post (look ma, I'm a multi-tasker!) I've always wanted to watch this, ever since it popped up on my recommended list from Netflix- I am completely obsessed with older movies, especially anything about ballet. I think it's been a secret longing of mine to dance ballet, which explains my love of anything ballet. The lines that the dancer makes, the waist cinching tutus- oh man.

But this movie has been quite interesting. An aspiring ballet dancer (always aspiring..) lands a role in the production of The Red Shoes, a story about a girl who gets her hands on red shoes and dances beautifully with them on. But the shoes won't come off, and they force the girl to keep dancing gracefully until.. yeah. She dies.

What do the shoes mean to me? I think it's the effect of art on humankind. When we get a glimpse of art, beauty, creativity, we love it and want so much more. But as the red shoes did, art and the pursuit of creativity can burn us out until it takes our last breath.

I didn't mean for this post to sound so depressing but I think we all relate to Moira Shearer's character. Who doesn't love the arts? I find myself constantly racking my brains for new ideas, of something original to present to the world, and when I can't get anything, I feel almost inadequate. CAN I GET AN AMEN?! I guess what I took back is that we have to be careful of what is seemingly unattainable. Creativity is something surreal, if we get too much it harms us more than we will ever know. Keep your feet on the ground as you let your head in the clouds. I do believe that was a Paramore lyric but it makes sense now!

it takes something special to be a dad.

Happy Father's Day!

A picture of my dad when he was growing up in Korea.

I always felt bad for dads on Father's Day because it's like a severely watered down Mother's Day. Dads aren't going to get showered in love and bouqets of flowers- they'll get a powerdrill if they're lucky. Such is the stigmas we make and have followed about dads!

A lot of people don't celebrate Father's Day because their dads aren't around- I'm one of the lucky few to still have my dad with me. Would I say that having the presence of my dad around made me a well-rounded person? Haha who knows?! I'd like to think so.

Truth is, my dad drives me absolutely crazy. We have the exact same stubborn, sometimes callous personality who is so bent on finishing a task that we seem like crazy robots. BUT. Every night I'm so grateful for everything and everyone in my life, no matter what. To imagine my life without all of the people I love would be so weird. I love my dad because he loves his family. And he's freaking hilarious when I play him in dominoes.

So if you have someone, anyone in your life that has been a father figure or really a parental figure in general, it's time to tell them that you love them and appreciate their caring and guidance.

something borrowed

Last week I came across three tickets to the Bridal Fashion Debut from a friend so I thought we should have a little fun with it.. I brought a few girlfriends and we fabricated a story about a wedding taking place. My best friend was the bride, me the Maid of Honor, and my other friend as the groom's sister!!

We even had the location, date, and everything else memorized! Even though we were a little sad that not a lot of people asked for the details, we still had a shocking amount of fun. There were so many young brides to be, we just wanted the cake samples and try on wedding dresses! I hear that's bad luck.. We couldn't find any our sizes anyway..

Then a fashion show ensued after the festivities- my first fashion show! The girls were gorgeous even if I didn't especially enjoy the dresses. So much fun, I wonder how many people just went because they wanted to? I'm sure no one... IT'S ALRIGHT THOUGH I GOT FREE STUFF(:
